Coming out is a lifelong process of (self-)acceptance.
Publicly identifying, implicitly or explicitly, as one's gender and/or orientation may or may not be part of coming out. Such people may instead choose to stay in the closet, due to homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, and other queerphobias.
Coming out may also apply to those born into religious cultures or communities who identify as atheist or as a faith significantly different to the one into which they were born. In such cases they fear atheophobia, Islamophobia, and so on.
